The 2021 Relay for Life of Chippewa/Yellow Medicine was an in-person event held on Friday, August 13th at Smith Park in Montevideo. This year was the 28th annual Relay for Life event held in Chippewa County. Several years ago Chippewa and Yellow Medicine Counties combined to hold a joint Relay for Life. Teams participating in this year’s walk consisted of individuals representing various corporations, organizations, clubs, and families. Teams set up campsites at Smith Park and took turns walking or running around the path. There was a silent auction from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. as well as a split-the-pot drawing Luminaries were also available for purchase by donation, and individual teams hosted games throughout the evening. Relay for Life is a major source of fundraising for the American Cancer Society each year. Annually, more than 3.5 million people in the United States participate in the Relay for Life events.
According to the American Cancer Society, one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and the money raised through these events is used by the American Cancer Society in many ways. The funds are used for empowering activists, delivering breakthrough research, and more.
